  1. 5th house primarily shows good karma. But affliction shows lack of good karma and also presence of bad karma.
8th house primarily shows โ€œnija doshaโ€ or bad karma, but good influence shows good karma as well.

The thing is, any house cannot show just 1 side of any signification, it always shows both sides. Like 7th house will be seen for marriage, but the same will also be seen for divorce/no marriage. 2nd house or 11th house may be seen for money, but the same has to be seen for poverty as well. 6th house may be seen for disease, but cannot be left out while evaluating health. Similarly 12th house is seen for moksha, and also for imprisonment.
These are not opposites but just 2 sides of the same coinโ€ฆ it is the same coin on both sides.

The real thing to identify is WHEN a house shows WHICH signification – or here, when does 5th house show good karma and when does it show bad karma.

Another important thing to consider is the 9th house. Basically, 5th house shows โ€œchildrenโ€ or โ€œwhat the native createsโ€. This means 1st house is the source of creation or the creator, and 5th house is the creation. Now lagna shows the current birth or the native himself. Where does the current birth / native come from = what created the native = the house from which lagna is the 5th house = the 9th house. Current birth is a fruit of past birth. 9th house is the seed of the native. Hence, 9th house becomes a very important house of past karma (good as well as bad) and thus also house of bhagya or fate.
5th and 9th are intricately connected as 9th to 9th is the 5th house, and 5th to 5th is the 9th house.

Further, every house of the chart shows past karma or pending karma, and almost always there will be a mix of good and bad karma in all houses.

This is in my humble perception.
